Opera's Settings File Explained

This document contains information about Opera's configuration options.

operaprefs.ini is an initialization file for Opera, essentially a settings file that specifies most of the user preferences. When you alter your preferences within the Opera user interface, this file is automatically modified and saved.

This document was last updated for Opera 11.60.

opera:config

Opera also has an integrated webpage for configuring operaprefs.ini settings, available by going to opera:config. Here you will find all settings from operaprefs.ini that are editable manually. Do note that some settings require a restart of Opera.

The list below will link directly to opera:config settings when available. Links will not work in browsers other than Opera.

Locations

The operaprefs.ini file may also be edited directly. This should never be done while Opera is running. We recommend that the customized version of operaprefs.ini be stored in the Opera directory, which is the first place Opera will look for a settings file. This is particularly important to note if you want to run several versions of Opera with different settings, or you have multiple sets of different settings for the same version.

By default, operaprefs.ini will be placed in the user directory (~/.opera on Linux, /profile or a sub-directory of /user settings on Windows). For information on how to used system fixed settings files, please refer to the System Administrator's Handbook.

Tip: The easiest way to see where operaprefs.ini and other Opera files are located on your computer, is to go to Help > About Opera.

Advice on editing

  • Make a backup of your original operaprefs.ini before editing.
  • Be careful. Do not change a setting if you are not familiar with what it does.
  • If you end up having to delete your settings file, a new one will be generated when you start Opera, but all previous settings will then be gone.

Syntax and values

For integer fields:

  • Value = 1 = TRUE; switched on
  • Value = 0 = FALSE; switched off

Note that some settings are stated in the negative, so that setting to 1 means disabling.

Lag Threshold For Animation Throttling The average lag (in ms) of messages in dispatcher's queue that should be considered as throttling trigger. This value is a threshold used to determine whether the throttling of animated content is needed or not. 50 N/A

Reflow Delay LoadDetermines how often, in milliseconds, we aim to reflow the document while loading. Lower value means more "incremental" rendering, but slows loading down since we'll spend more time in total reflowing. If the value is zero, there will be no delay, which is not recommended for anyone. The appropriate value for this tweak depends largely on platform performance, and so is difficult to estimate accurately based on profile only. Testing and tuning "on device" while performing "average browsing" is typically very useful.200N/A
Reflow Delay ScriptDetermines how often, in milliseconds, we aim to reflow the document while executing a script (usually the reflow would then be caused by the script.) Lower value means more "incremental" rendering, but slows down script execution since we'll spend more time in total reflowing. If the value is zero, there will be no delay.500N/A
Switch Animation Throttling Interval The minimal interval (in ms) that should be kept between enabling/disabling the throttling of animated content. This value is used used to not switch the throttling too often. 2000 N/A
Synchronous DNS Lookup Use synchronous DNS lookup 0 N/A
Wait For StylesDetermines how long we will hold the layout waiting for styles. This is to avoid drawing something unstyled (ugly)that will be replaced by something styled very soon. Setting this to 0 means that we won't wait for styles and instead show anything as fast as possible.5000N/A
